Scripts is the way you can program objects, people and other things (except for normal clothing) in second life. scripts are both extensive and limits (much is done so script can not be used to control other persons in Second Life with out consent)
One of the positive things about scripting, is that it, from outside Second life, it is just seen as text. And you are able to copy paste text into Second Life note cards and scripts at no cost at all.
